The difference is called the <strong>premium<\/strong> \u2014 and understanding it is the single most useful skill a gold buyer can have.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>spot price<\/strong> is the live market price for one gram of pure gold, traded globally around the clock. No physical shop can sell at spot: on top of it come refining and minting costs, secure logistics and insurance, and the dealer's margin. Together these form the premium, usually expressed as a percentage above the metal value.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important rule: <strong>premiums fall as bars get bigger<\/strong>. Producing a 1 g minted bar costs almost as much as producing a 100 g bar, so the fixed costs weigh far more on small weights. A 1 g bar may carry a premium of 10\u201315%, a 100 g bar 2\u20134%, and a kilobar close to 1%. Minted bars also carry slightly higher premiums than cast bars of the same weight.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When comparing offers, always calculate the <em>price per gram<\/em> and the <em>premium over spot<\/em> \u2014 not just the sticker price.
