Cast vs. Minted Gold Bars: What's the Difference?

All investment gold bars contain the same fine gold — but the way a bar is made changes how it looks, how it is packaged and what it costs. There are two production methods: casting and minting.

Cast Bars are made the traditional way: molten gold is poured into a mould and left to solidify. Each bar has a slightly rustic, individual character, with the refiner's stamp pressed into the surface. Because the process is simple, cast bars carry the lowest premium over the gold price — which is why larger weights (100 g, 250 g, 1 kg) are usually cast. They are the efficient choice for investors who want maximum gold for their money.

Minted Bars start as a cast blank that is rolled, cut and struck with polished dies — the same technique used for coins. The result is a perfectly smooth, mirror-like bar with sharp detail, sealed in tamper-evident blister packaging with an integrated certificate. Minted bars cost slightly more per gram, but they are easier to store, verify and resell one at a time, which makes them popular in smaller weights (1 g to 100 g) and as gifts.

Neither type is “better” — it depends on your goal. Building a large position at the lowest cost? Cast. Flexibility, presentation and easy resale in parts? Minted. At AurumX you can browse both: every bar is LBMA-accredited, and every purchase is covered by my buyback guarantee.
