What is Gold? The Science Behind the World's Most Trusted Metal

Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au (from the Latin aurum) and atomic number 79. It is one of the densest metals on Earth at 19.3 g/cm³ — a standard 1 kilogram bar is only about the size of a smartphone. Gold is also remarkably soft and malleable: a single gram can be hammered into a sheet of one square metre.

What makes gold truly special is its chemical stability. It is one of the least reactive elements known: it does not rust, tarnish or corrode, and it is untouched by air, water and almost all acids. A gold bar minted today will look exactly the same in a thousand years. This permanence is the scientific foundation of gold's role as a store of value across every civilisation in history.

Gold is also genuinely rare — and cosmically old. It cannot be created by any chemical process; astrophysicists believe most of it was forged in collisions of neutron stars billions of years ago. All the gold ever mined in human history would fit into a cube of roughly 22 metres per side.

Investment gold is refined to a purity of 999.9/1000, known as fine gold or 24 carat. Every bar I sell at AurumX is produced by LBMA-accredited refiners and arrives sealed, certified and serial-numbered.
